If you leave out a digit, the system will not find the case. The search covers current and closed cases from the General Division, Domestic Relations Division, and all four Area Courts.

This portal covers the Common Pleas General Division, Domestic Relations Division, and all four Area Courts in the county.

There are some limits to online access. Records from pre-1989 cases may only be available by visiting the courthouse in person. Information not allowed by law to be public is also excluded from online searches. Domestic Violence and Stalking Civil Protection Orders will not show up in the public access system. If you need help with a search or run into problems, you can email the courts at courts@mahoningcountyoh.gov for assistance.

Civil Court Records Access Under Ohio Law

Mahoning County court records are public under Ohio Revised Code ยง 149.43. Any person can request records. You do not have to give your name. The clerk must provide records promptly during business hours. Copies are made at cost.

Certain records are exempt. Juvenile case files, sealed records, medical records, and active law enforcement investigation files cannot be released. If a record has both public and exempt parts, the clerk redacts the protected information and provides the rest. The office must tell you if any part of your request is denied or redacted. Under Ohio law, if a public office fails to comply with a records request, you can file a complaint with the Ohio Court of Claims. Mediation is the first step. If that does not work, the court can award up to $1,000 in damages.

Records retention for Ohio courts is governed by Rule 26 of the Rules of Superintendence. Courts may keep records on paper, electronic media, or microfilm. Older records from before 1960 or those held for more than ten years require notice to the Ohio Historical Society before they can be destroyed. This protects the historical record of civil court activity in Mahoning County and across the state.
